Summary
While searching through his grandfather’s belongings, sixth-grader Hikaru Shindo discovers an old Go board inhabited by Fujiwara no Sai, the ghost of a master player from the Heian period. With Sai guiding his moves, Hikaru enters the world of Go despite having little interest in the game himself.
An encounter with gifted young player Akira Toya gives Hikaru a rival and gradually awakens his own desire to improve. Through school clubs, tournaments, and matches against players of different ages and styles, the story turns the quiet strategy of Go into a tense competition while following Hikaru’s growth from a reluctant beginner into a determined player.
