Summary
Story begins with a nameless protagonist awakening in an unknown, snow-covered terrain, under attack by a fearsome insect-like beast. His life is saved by Kuon, a girl with the ears and tail of an animal, who compassionately aids him in his moment of desperation. Naming him Haku, Kuon becomes his guide and protector, introducing him to her homeland of Yamato.
As Haku settles into this strange new world, he realizes he is distinctly different from everyone else, lacking the animal characteristics that define the inhabitants of Yamato. His journey with Kuon leads them to the capital, where they navigate through the societal intricacies and emerging conflicts of the land.
