Hikigaya Hachiman is a cynical high school student whose bleak outlook on life has left him utterly friendless and disinterested in romance. Preferring the solitary comfort of his own cynicism, Hachiman's life takes an unexpected turn when his iconoclastic views on social relationships land him in the Volunteer Service Club, headed by the school's reputed beauty, Yukino Yukinoshita. Tasked with assisting their fellow students with their diverse life issues, the club is Hachiman's worst nightmare—forcing him to engage with a youth he's long despised.

As he and Yukino tackle the various problems that come their way, Hachiman is confronted with the irony of his own situation: helping others achieve their happy, youthful lives, a concept he neither understands nor endorses. But through each new challenge, Hachiman's sharp intellect and Yukino's resourceful nature reveal that perhaps there's more to high school life than loneliness and disillusionment.
