Summary
Chakuro, a 14-year-old archivist, lives on the Mud Whale, an island that floats on an endless sea of sand. Most of the inhabitants, including Chakuro, possess a special power called saimia, which grants them supernatural abilities but also shortens their lifespans. Despite discovering many other islands, Chakuro and his friends have never encountered other humans—until one day, they come across a large island similar to the Mud Whale.
During an expedition to this new island, Chakuro meets a mysterious girl who will change his destiny and the world of the Mud Whale forever. Her arrival brings new knowledge about the outside world and the secrets of their own isolated home. As Chakuro learns more from her, he realizes that their utopian life on the Mud Whale is about to face unprecedented challenges and changes.
